Committed to the well-being of the island
The founding couple of the Centro Antroposófico practiced biodynamic agriculture on Lanzarote, which works to heal the earth and people. We remain true to this impulse and strive to operate as sustainably as possible. For us, the island of Lanzarote is a unique and precious human asset.
Biosphere reserve
Lanzarote is protected by UNESCO and has been declared a biosphere reserve since 1993. This covers the entire island and the northern side islands, a total of 84,600 hectares. This is the first time that an entire area has been recognized by UNESCO, including all inhabited regions. The symbiosis between man and nature on the island is the main reason for this international recognition. The aim of a biosphere reserve is to protect and preserve the representative ecosystems of a region. At the same time, sustainable development in ecological, economic and social terms should be realized in an exemplary manner.
Alongside these goals is the reality of 3.4 million tourists in 2024 with the familiar problems of high water consumption, mountains of waste, low wages and rising house prices for the locals. With our little oasis, we are trying to show that things can be done differently.
A different way of doing business
As a charitable foundation, we pursue a different way of doing business that focuses on personal development and caring for the earth. Ecological awareness and social responsibility accompany our daily interactions at Centro. This also includes good working conditions, secure employment and fair wages for our local employees.
Concrete differences
- Laundry partly in-house, ecological detergents, no daily linen change
- Ecological cleaning and hygiene products
- Waste separation
- Recycled paper in administration
- Own treatment of osmosis water for our drinking water supply, thus avoiding the import of drinking water in plastic containers
- if possible, organic building materials and solid wood furniture
- Fresh and seasonal food, preferably organic and regionally produced, in the restaurant
- Organic store for self-sufficiency
- Bread from the organic baker “AndiBrot” on the island
- Vacation without a car possible thanks to the location and infrastructure of the Centro
Own drinking water treatment
Lanzarote no longer has its own groundwater. While the local population used to collect rainwater in cisterns, seawater has been petrochemically desalinated for around 30 years. This water is basically drinkable, but problematic due to chlorine and other added chemicals. This is why most people buy drinking water in PET bottles or canisters. Transportation and waste are a heavy burden on the environment.
In 2004, we opted for a system that treats and vitalizes the desalinated water in four steps:
- It no longer contains any harmful substances.
- Its nitrate content is far below the limit permitted for infant formula.
- Its conductivity is below 20 microSiemens, which corresponds to the best spring water quality.
- Its minimal mineral content helps to purify the body.
- Food and drinks prepared with this water are tastier.
- It has a considerably increased liveliness.
As guests, you can draw as much of this good water as you need free of charge!
The inevitable flying
Yes, we also use airplanes for travel. And you, dear guests, have to fly to us if you don’t have the time and patience to travel by ship. This fact makes us doubt again and again. Which drives us to carry on: Many guests find relaxation, healing and new strength with us so that they can continue to pursue their idealistic goals and commitments at home. The anthroposophical impulses – Waldorf kindergarten, therapeutic center, biodynamics, cultural life, Christian community – continue to need care and attention. That is why we are staying tuned!
CompensateCO2
On the atmosfair.de website you can calculate theCO2 consumption of your flight and offset it by making a donation to a climate protection project.
