Salt carpets

If you go to the larger villages on the island last weekend, you can watch the busy hands of volunteers spreading colorful salt carpets in the plazas in front of the churches.

A Corpus Christi procession led by the priest will then walk over this carpet on Sunday. This small work of art, which has been so carefully guarded and admired until then, will now be walked on by feet.

The salt stands here as an image for an all-enduring, wise, materialized force. A materiality, perhaps, that helps us to come to ourselves. Into this inner being where everything can be found… When we eat salty food, we incarnate.

Lanzarote truly invites you to puzzle over salt. Dissolved in seawater, crystallized snow-white in our salt pans, it is omnipresent. Yes, and especially this weekend!

Once entered, the images of the carpet on the plaza dissolve. Now it is children’s hands that reach into the colorful salt, filling a sachet or a jar to take some of this treasure home with them.
