Autumn

Yesterday I caught myself thinking: “Oh, if only it could rain.” Listening inwardly, it was not so much the longing for moisture for nature that spoke to me as a very specific need that lies dormant in some people. It is awakened, crescendo, at the height of the outward buzz in the course of the island year. And that’s pretty much now: Festivals, music, dancing, beaches, last days of vacation draw out. Village saints and people in traditional costume parading through the streets… Colorful flags in the wind…

A feeling of “too much” spreads and announces the need to pull yourself back together. It goes hand in hand with the curling of four walls, long trousers, perhaps a sweater that clings to the skin. And thus shows: Here you have an outer boundary, a protection, an inner space into which you can retreat… And what better excuse could there be for retreating than a gray, rainy day?

The first lines of the 23rd weekly motto from Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul are fitting:

The senses’autumnal striving for stimulationis dampened
;
The fog of dull veilsmingles with the revelation of light
.
