There are still a few miniature nativity scenes, called Belenes, on the island that can be visited. And: it’s worth it! The event of the Nativity in the stable, accompanied by shepherds and the Three Wise Men, is embedded here in our Lanzarote landscape.
The nativity scene at the Bodega Stratus in la Geria is particularly beautiful this year. Among other things, we find a replica of the Jardín de Cactus with a wide variety of prickly plants in perfect size, the walls raised from small lava stones. It is not surprising that it is the Conejeros, the inhabitants themselves, who are touched by the recognition of their island. From this bird’s eye view, they marvel at the beauty of their island, the wisdom with which the people can deal with their earth and the sea – back then, and: Always when it is wanted! After all, there is no room for large hotel bunkers in the Belenes.
One of our island children is César Manrique and I imagine him enjoying the sight of this Belén. And we agree – the birth of Christ is everywhere in this world. Everywhere warmth can enter and light can shine.
