Anyone approaching Lanzarote was surprised. Is there a confusion with Ireland? Lush, fresh greenery initially only washed around mountains, flowed down ravines, branched out and wound its way through the landscape in fine veins. However, it is now apparent that it is not only where it is more humid and plants can thrive in a more protected environment that they begin to germinate and grow, but wherever there is some soil, seeds that have apparently been dormant for years are now also being kissed awake.
Seen from above, Timanfaya National Park is probably the only large, unvegetated spot at the moment. The 200 different species of lichen that inhabit the volcanic rock cannot be seen from the air. Or are they? On closer inspection, don’t they light up, glistening with aquatic joy?
